PROJECT PORTFOLIO
Folger Shakespeare Library – Renovation & Addition
About This Project
The Folger Shakespeare Library, originally designed by architect Paul Cret in 1932, underwent a transformative renovation to enhance public access, improve amenities, and preserve its historic character. The project expanded and modernized interior spaces while carefully maintaining the building’s iconic exterior.
A major component of the work involved removing the existing plinth, excavating below grade, and constructing new structural extensions. All original Georgia marble elements were meticulously documented, catalogued, salvaged, and stored prior to removal, ensuring precise reinstallation. These included planters, stair treads, coping stones, cladding, and water table stone.
Salvaged materials were cleaned, repaired, and reinstated wherever possible, with damaged pieces expertly restored or replaced. Mock-ups were used to verify compatibility between historic and new materials and ensure seamless integration. The project also introduced new accessibility features, including ramps, and repurposed original stone for new applications. New materials such as Montclair Danby and Bluestone pavers, Mt. Airy and Georgia cladding, Jet Mist pavers, and cubic stair stone were integrated with restored elements. Completed in 2024, the renovation preserves the Folger’s architectural legacy while enhancing functionality and visitor experience.
