Arlington National Cemetery celebrated the restoration of the historic Ord and Weitzel Gate on November 8, 2022, marking the completion of a multi-year preservation effort. The northern pedestrian entrance, originally constructed in 1879 under General Montgomery C. Meigs, features signature columns salvaged from the demolished War Department building in Washington, D.C. The project included gate restoration, improvements to the adjacent Custis Walk, and construction of a new guardhouse to enhance security. Lorton Stone contributed to the restoration work alongside other engineering contractors. Executive Director Karen Durham-Aguilera described the reopening as “an important milestone in ANC’s long-range plan to preserve our priceless monument and architectural history.” The restored gate now provides visitors access from the Rosslyn Metro station and U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial.
